I wouldn’t really consider myself a health nut, more like health conscious, but I have to admit that I’m a foodie! And one that’s had to learn to curb her sweet tooth and for foods rich in flavor, spices and sugar.
As you can imagine, this is an ongoing battle and major dilemma when trying to be more heath conscious and eating green. But, I’ve learned a simple trick — supplementing some of the richer ingredients for healthier ones and combining the two. Instead of rice, eat a baked sweet potato. It will satisfy your body with enough healthy carbohydrates while keeping your energy up and satisfying your sweet tooth. Supplementing ingredients richer in flavor and spices work for salads as well.
Here’s my homemade fruit and veggie salad combination that leaves me satisfied both in flavor and appetite.
If you take a look at the photo above, I have a homemade fruit and veggie salad mix. I have a baked salmon that I’ve shredded on mixed romaine lettuce, minced gala apples, dried cranberries, shredded American cheese (2% skim), corn with low-fat Italian dressing.
This is really simple to make and the sweet flavor from the apples and corn satisfies my sweet tooth, while the salmon gives me lean and healthy protein. The cheese and the salad dressing adds flavor, but, I made sure to eliminate the excess fat by getting cheese made with 2% skim-milk and low fat dressing.
